I have a similar problem running ES2 on Mojave. I bought the game yesterday so I didn't run it on another OS than Mojave. After launching ES2 the menu bar disapears.Then after approximately 20-30s I get a white background and where the menu bar normaly is, I can see the desktop. Hovering the mouse to the top of the screen shows the ES2 menu bar. I see that you are getting an endless spinning wheel at shutdown. This causes you to have to force power down in order to get the computer to turn off. I definitely can understand wanting to shut your computer down immediately when you press shut down. Let's see how I can help.
It sounds like your iMac is having an issue with shutting down all of the apps running in the background. These apps can load when you log in. I would suggest taking a look and seeing what is included in your iMac's login items, and make any adjustments by removing unnecessary login items.
